Middle Georgia Veterans Receive Free Medical Services

September 7, 2012

Today, dozens of Middle Georgians came together to help U.S. veterans. The event called "Stand Down" was held at the VFW in Macon. State Representative Dr. James Beverly along with several other organizations and volunteers played a vital role in making "Stand Down" a success. Free medical services, hair cuts, clothing, and sleeping bags were provided to hundreds of veterans.

The event provided counseling, job assistance, healthcare, vision tests, haircuts, and clothing, as well as a free meal.

Beverly proposes bill to create anti-poverty authority

March 14, 2012

A new five-member authority would be created to unify official anti-poverty efforts under a new bill filed in the state House.

“I looked at federal, state and local programs,” said bill sponsor state Rep. James Beverly, D-Macon, and “there’s not a coordinated effort to use those to attack poverty.”

Forum focuses on Macon-Bibb consolidation, schools’ strategic plan

February 21, 2012

The Martin Luther King Jr. Commission held a forum Monday night to discuss two of the biggest issues facing Bibb County residents -- consolidation of the county and the city of Macon, and Bibb County school Superintendent Romain Dallemand’s strategic plan to improve the school system.

About 30 people attended Monday’s forum at the Douglass Theatre to hear a discussion on both topics which featured state Rep. James Beverly, D-Macon; former state Rep. David Lucas; City Councilman Henry Ficklin; educator Kim Carter; and community activist George Muhammad. Bibb County school board member Wanda West replaced Beverly for the discussion of the strategic plan.

Rep. James Beverly seeks job tax credits in poorest neighborhoods

January 18, 2012

State Rep. James Beverly, D-Macon, in office for less than a year, has filed his first bill, and it’s got some heavyweight signatures on it.

House Bill 747 would increase the state tax credit that companies can get for creating jobs in the poorest neighborhoods to a maximum of $4,000 each.
